Module 12 · Offline mode

Offline stable app: horse records even with no signal in the barn

In the barn, on the pasture behind the hill or in the cellar with the hay, the signal tends to be weak or absent. iPalomino allows for that: it keeps the data right on the phone, so you work with profiles, the calendar, tasks and stock without the internet — and when the signal returns, everything syncs without you lifting a finger.

In short

An app that doesn’t wait for a signal

Data on the phone

Profiles, records, calendar and stock are stored on the device. They open instantly, even with no connection.

You enter things right away

You tick off a task, confirm a feeding and add a record wherever you happen to be standing. Nothing is put off until later.

Sync on return

As soon as the phone has a connection, the changes are sent and news from the rest of the team is downloaded.

Backup against loss

The data is backed up to your account, so you restore it on a new phone.

Why a stable app has to work offline

Most apps assume you are always connected. Stables, ranches and farms, however, stand exactly where coverage ends: at the edge of the village, in a valley, behind the thick walls of an old barn. An app that asks a server at every tap is useless in such a place — the spinner turns and meanwhile you forget what you wanted to write down.

Yet with animals, things are recorded on the spot. You notice an injury in the stall. You confirm a feeding at the trough. You write down a weight at the scales. If it can’t be done immediately, you put it off “for later” — and later you no longer know whether it was 541 or 514 kilos.

An offline stable app is therefore not an add-on but a basic property. iPalomino is built so that it needs the internet only to exchange data with the server and with your team, not for the work itself.

Everything that works without the internet

The short answer: everything you do with your own data. Specifically:

  • Animal records — viewing and editing profiles, photos, alerts, identification.
  • Calendar and tasks — new appointments, tasks, ticking them off, filters and the monthly overview.
  • Health record — new entries, weigh-ins, medication and the emergency overview.
  • Feeding and stock — confirming a feeding, deducting supplies, adding feed.
  • QR codes — scanning the code on a stall and displaying the horse’s card.
  • Breeding, contacts and documents — everything you already have on the phone.
  • Reminders — your own appointments, tasks and medication remind you even with no signal.

How syncing works once the signal returns

You don’t have to take care of syncing. The app itself remembers what you changed and deals with it at the next connection. See what happens in each situation:

Interactive demo: what happens to your data

You are working in the barn with no connection

Everything you enter is saved to the phone, and the app notes that it still has to be sent:

  • Morning feeding confirmed — saved on the phone
  • New injury record with a photo — saved on the phone
  • Task “Muck out the stalls” done — saved on the phone

The phone has connected to the internet

Without you pressing anything, data is exchanged in both directions:

  • Your three changes are sent to your account
  • Changes from others are downloaded — for example a new appointment from the vet
  • The team gets alerts about what you did

You have replaced or lost your phone

You sign in with the same account and the data is restored from the backup:

  • All animals, records, the calendar and the stock
  • Photos and uploaded documents
  • Stables that someone shares with you

Syncing runs in the background. Changes you made offline are not lost even if you close the app in the meantime.

Who offline mode helps

Horse owners

Is your horse boarded at a ranch where the phone only picks up a signal by the gate? You open the health record, the feed ration and the chip number right in the stall, and whatever you enter is sent once you step out into the yard.

Farms and breeders

On pastures and in remote farm buildings the signal is a lottery. Offline animal records mean you write things down where the animal stands, not from memory at home in the evening.

Ranches and stables with a team

The groom confirms feedings and ticks off tasks in the barn regardless of coverage. The owner sees everything as soon as the groom’s phone connects — typically a few minutes later in the yard.

Professionals: farrier, vet, trainer

A vet out in the field cannot wait for a signal. They enter the treatment record right beside the horse, and it is transferred to the owner’s stable once they are within range of a network.

The most common mistakes when there is no signal in the stable

A poor signal leads to workarounds that look sensible but come back to bite you:

  • A slip of paper and copying it in the evening. Half the slips end up in the washing machine. An entry made right in the app is saved at once, even with no connection.
  • A spreadsheet in the cloud. Without the internet it doesn’t open, or doesn’t save changes. An offline stable app keeps the data on the phone.
  • Photos of injuries in the gallery. Half a year later you don’t know which horse or when. A photo attached to a health record has a date and context.
  • Using the app without signing in. Without an account there is no backup. Once you sign in, the data is backed up and survives the loss of the phone.
  • Waiting for Wi-Fi before writing things down. By the time you get home you have forgotten half of it. Enter it now; syncing will wait.

Offline horse records are not an emergency mode. They are the normal way of working in a barn — the app needs the internet only to pass your changes on.

Backup of horse data and security

Offline mode doesn’t mean the data lives on just one phone. While you are signed in, the app backs it up to your account on our server in the European Union. Thanks to that you have it on all your devices, and you won’t lose years of records when your phone falls into the water trough.

The data belongs to you. It serves only for backup, restore and syncing — we don’t sell it to anyone and we don’t use it for advertising. It is shared with other people only when you invite them to the stable yourself; how that works is explained in the article roles and access.

Printed things work offline too: you scan QR codes on horse stalls with no signal, and you can create an export of the horse’s health history to PDF at any time and send it once you are connected.

An example from the ranch

An old stone barn, zero signal. In the morning the groom feeds, confirms six feedings in the app and enters a graze on one horse together with a photo. The whole time his phone shows “no service”.

Half an hour later he steps out into the yard, the phone connects and the app sends everything. At that moment the owner gets an alert about a new health record, the feed stock is recalculated and six confirmed feedings show in the calendar. The groom did nothing extra — just his job.

Frequently asked questions

Does iPalomino work without the internet?

Yes. The data is stored on the phone, so you work with profiles, the calendar, tasks, health records and stock even with no signal.

What happens to changes I make offline?

They are saved on the phone and sent by themselves once you connect to the internet. You don’t have to press anything or remember what you changed.

Will I lose my data if I lose my phone?

No, provided you were signed in. The data is backed up to your account and restored on a new phone after you sign in.

Does the team see my changes while I’m offline?

They see them as soon as your phone connects. Until then the changes stay only on your device.

What doesn’t work without the internet?

Searching for professionals nearby, the video guides for the tips and the delivery of alerts about changes from other people on the team.
